Loving my new desktop computer, August 31, 2014

This review is from: ZOTAC ZBOX Sphere OI520 Series Mini PC with Intel Core i5 barebones system (ZBOX-OI520-U) (Personal Computers)

I bought this computer in order to build a new Linux system. I purchased as a barebones computer (no RAM or hard disk. I did this because I wanted to install a Solid State Drive (SSD). It arrived before I expected in excellent condition along with the memory and SSD. I love the styling of this spherical and very small computer. I wanted a small desktop that could sit easily on my workspace but that also looks cool. This fits the bill.

As I noted earlier this is a barebones computer so I installed a Crucial MX100 512GB SATA 2.5″ 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT512MX100SSD1 from Amazon and RAM by Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8, also purchased from Amazon. Installation was a breeze. The top of the sphere is hand rotated to the right and pulled off. It comes off pretty easy and exposes the connections for both the memory and SSD. The memory module is on the left and the SSD or hard drive connects to the right of that. The memory popped right in without any problems. The SSD also slipped in very easily into the connector toward the back of the sphere and needs to be screwed in with a small screw that is seated on the left top part of the drive. The small screw comes in a bag that is included with the ZBOX. It also comes with an installation disk that installs Windows drivers for the hardware. I did not use these as I built this to be a Linux computer.

If you are going to install an SSD you are going to have to go into the BIOS and set it for an SSD. I found this out the hard way when I tried installing Linux to the SSD and got an error, as I forgot to set the BIOS to look for an SSD instead of a HD. To set the BIOS to see the SSD do the following:

    1. Turn on the computer and press the DELETE key before booting the system to get to the BIOS menus.
    2. Once the BIOS menus appear use the arrow key to tab to FEATURES.
    3. Look for STORAGE CONFIGURATION use the down arrows to highlight it and select by pressing Enter.
    4. Look for SATA DEVICE TYPE use the down arrow to highlight it and press Enter.
    5. After pressing Enter look to the right and you will see an option for SOLID STATE DRIVE use the arrow key to select it and press Enter.
6 Press Esc and get back to the tabs on top and then use the arrow keys to get to the EXIT AND SAVE and press Enter.
    7. You are done and the system will now detect the SSD and you can install your OS.

Once I did that the SSD came to life and I was off to the races. The ZBOX does not come with any disk drives so I plugged in an external usb-dvd to one of the usb ports in order to run my Linux installation. I installed Linux Mint 17 onto the SSD and everything worked. I was able to connect to the wifi to my internet, activated and installed my Bluetooth portable speaker. I have not yet connected my printer which is a wireless and will require my connecting it first to a usb connection. I will update later with my experience there.

I have surfed the net using both Chrome and Firefox without any problems. Logitech keyboard is connected and works well. HP bluetooth mouse also runs fine. Connected my small bluetooth speaker and it connected and worked as well. My 27 inch HP 27xi monitor renders images sharp and bright, no problems whats-so-ever. With the Crucial SSD installed this machine flies. Boot up time is about 8-10 seconds! Everything just works!

While I am not running Windows on this machine, given that it comes with Win drivers and is obviously built with the Windows users in mind, I would strongly suspect that Windows will run fine. The instructions, which are not all that good, are written for a Windows installation and should suffice for that type of installation.

I am really enjoying this computer and for Linux users I think this is sufficiently compatible with the hardware to run most versions. I can attest that it runs Linux Mint 17 very well. I partitioned the SSD and installed Peach OSI on the second partition. The second install created a GRUB menu and Peach worked as well. Peach is also an Ubuntu variant and I suspect that this machine should do well with all of the *buntu respins out there. I will leave it to others to try other Linux desktops. I will update later on printer experience and the like. For now I can highly recommend this machine to those of you that want to build-your-own. For the money this little machine will be hard to beat and it adds a touch of class to my desk making my computing experience more visually enjoyable.

Update: I connected my HP4500 printer via the wifi and it works very well. Computer has given me absolutely no problems. If you are into building your own systems this is a piece of cake. Configuration, disk drive installation and memory super-easy. I enjoy using this computer very much and I…

I ordered an SSD 500 GB hard drive and 16GB of RAM and it is FAST 🙂 no regrets spend the money.
The onboard video and audio are superb.
It’s streams without a glitch music movies
The sound is clean and tight

Poor quality control. The video interface did not work…a complete waste of time. I am glad Amazon gave me a full refund.
