Perfect For General Computing, September 10, 2014
    By
Jim (Panama City, FL USA) –

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This is an impressive little box, perfect for basic computing (pleasantly surprising, given its cost). Windows 8.1 comes preinstalled, so there’s only a simple setup process to walk through, acknowledging the license agreement, creating a user account (or tying in to your Microsoft account), etc. An initial Windows Update pass takes about an hour to complete, after that it’s ready. There’s no bloatware installed that I’ve run across, just the basic Windows stuff, including Microsoft Defender. Obviously Microsoft Office is not included.

It’s not apparent from the description, but the USB 3.0 ports are all on the back of the unit; both the front-facing and the up-facing (?) ports are USB 2.0. HDMI out works fine for video, though I can’t vouch for the HDMI audio. The ZBOX ships with a reinstallation DVD (a nice feature) and a disc containing Windows 7 and Windows 8 drivers. I haven’t tried installing Windows 7 (yet). The only issue I’ve seen so far is the video driver failed (and recovered) once; that may have been caused by Windows Update installing a newer driver.

The box is almost silent: if I put my ear up to it (mounted vertically, as suggested) I can make out some fan noise, but take just a step back and it’s gone. The included 64GB SSD (maybe about two-thirds free after installation) is, of course, silent (and fast).

I’m undecided on installing more than the included 2GB RAM. I’ll install Office and see how well it performs with basic productivity tasks before I upgrade. Zotac provides on their website a list of approved memory sticks (look for Tested memory list under Miscellaneous downloads), at least one of the 4GB ones fulfilled by Amazon (Samsung M471B5273CH0-CH9) for $46.

EDIT: As a commenter noted, the BI320 ships with a single 2GB RAM, rather than (2) 1GB SODIMMs. The standard configuration (2GB) works fine for me running standard Windows 7 and Office 2013, so I’m leaving the memory as-is. Also, it’s not obvious from the specs, there is room and a slot to install another SATA drive in the box (separate from the mSATA boot device). A small clamp fixes the drive in place.

One final note: Windows 7 installs fine using the provided drivers. In fact, oddly enough, the output going to my flat panel display looks noticeably clearer than under Windows 8. There was one hiccup with the USB 3.0 driver: installing the driver package disables all the USB ports, rendering the machine unusable. You have to manually install the driver alone (by finding the USB 3.0 hub in Device Manager and directing Windows to the saved driver). After that it works very well. Typical idle power consumption (as measured by a Kill A Watt) is around 5W, and I’ve seen it go no higher than around 18W in heavy use.

Excellent pc for light usage, September 23, 2014
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
I bought this to replace my wife’s rather ancient laptop that was giving up the ghost (we were using it with an external monitor and keyboard). She uses it for surfing the web, watching video (streaming from the web or home video stored on the pc), light editing of photos (mostly cropping) and basic word processing/spreadsheets (I loaded an older version of Office that I own).

For this type of use, this is a great pc. Setup was quick and painless and we’ve had no problems so far, although it’s only been a couple of weeks.

    Pros

    – Virtually silent. My wife has yet to hear the fan come on. Or if it has, she can’t hear it.
    – Quick. It boots up in about 8 seconds. Programs load in just a few seconds. The SSD helps make things very snappy.
    – Plenty of USB3 ports (although I’d have liked to have one in the front, rather than all 4 being in the back.) The front USB port is
    USB2
    – Tiny. Fits in a little cubby in her desk organizer.
    – Complete pc. I was looking at several bare bones kits, but this is ready to go out of the box. No need to buy (and install)
    memory, hard drive or OS.

    Cons/things to be aware of.

    – Not powerful. Quick does not necessarily mean powerful. I don’t think you’d want this if you wanted to play games on it or do
    heavy photo/video editing.
    – Only 64 GB of storage on the SSD. You can always add an external drive or inexpensive flash drive to increase storage if you
    need to.
    – No WIFI. If you need WIFI, be sure to buy a USB WIFI adapter.

I didn’t subtract anything from my rating over the listed cons because they don’t impact us in any way.

Overall, this is a perfect pc for what we use it for.

Perfect every day PC, January 25, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
I’m a huge fan of this PC. Setup was simple, I chose to do a fresh Windows8 install (very easy to do from settings menu). I then added a 750GB drive in the extra SATA slot (which is a huge bonus). Now I’ve got my O/S running on the 64GB SSD (50% free space), and all of my music, pictures, documents on the 750GB drive. Computer is whisper quiet, I don’t think I’ve heard the fan kick on yet to be honest.

I am using just the installed 2GB of RAM, and it seems to run fine with it. Right now I have 6 Chrome tabs open as well as iTunes. It’s nice knowing that there are two DIMM slots, so I can always bump the RAM up if needed.

I got this at $199, but I’ve seen it go lower, it should be a no brainer if you’re wanting a compact PC. 4x USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, SPDIF out, nice onboard audio DAC, plenty of ports/connections.

I think my favorite thing is boot up time, I think I’ve clocked it at around 10 seconds, which is ridiculous. This thing blows away any past PC I’ve had.
