I bought this product to scan product barcodes into a worksheet or database at a hair salon. This was my first experience with barcode scanners, so it was experimental. I was intrigued by the low price. It comes with a small but intimidating booklet for setting parameters, but you probably won’t need it unless you’re doing something special. There is no setup program or disk. If you need to set special parameters, you scan barcodes from the booklet. I plugged it into the USB port on my laptop PC, pressed the trigger, and I was scanning barcodes of different types of products into notepad, Excel, or Access immediately. It reads the barcodes instantly. Being restricted by a cord, it works better for point of purchase applications, where it is in close proximity to the PC. A cordless scanner would work better for product inventory and receiving purposes. I highly recommend this product for performing its basic function very well.

I purchased this to work with Delicious Library 2, a product cataloging app on the Mac. It worked perfectly! There was nothing to configure. It just worked.

I wanted to pass along my experience with this item.
Wired Handheld USB Automatic Laser Barcode Scanner Reader With USB Cable

It appears to be a Farsun 9100 barcode scanner (duh) with firmware v2.00 1011-01-01. It has a serial number and a big MADE IN CHINA sticker. It’s plastic, light weight and will probably survive a few drops to the floor.

It’s a USB model and comes with just the handheld scanner and a manual (no stand). It’s plug and play with WinXP and up and it installs as an HID Keyboard device.

It has a trigger to scan an item, a cord just over 6 feet long, and reads common bar codes. It works with an AmazonBasics USB 2.0 10 foot extension cable.

It will read codes (scanned from the setup guide) from 0 – 12 inches away.

WARNING: This scanner defaults to AUTOMATIC mode and you could scan your eyeballs by mistake. In AUTO mode, the scanner senses movement in front of the lens, like an approaching item, and activates the laser. This is fine if it had a stand, but in hand held use, you are reaching for stuff and moving items and boxes and the hand holding the scanner could be pointing anywhere and ZAP! – you are getting a dog and learning braille.

Workaround and caveat: Do NOT scan the “ENTER SETUP MODE” code on page 7. It doesn’t work right. If you already did, unplug it and start over. Just scan the code for the setting you want.
Settings are not saved when disconnected (not for me, anyway). With that I suggest scanning your code book into your computer for safe keeping as I could find NO support on the net. 600 dpi greyscale works well.
In the manual is a bar code for Single Scan. This SHOULD turn off AUTO mode but it doesn’t work quite right for me. I needed to set it to “CONTINUOUS” first and THEN set it to Single Scan. You may need to do this many times. Check it by bringing your hand up to the lens – it should stay off until you pull the trigger. You need to do this each time you plug in the scanner. Sometimes the scanner spits out garbage and setting the scanner to US or UNIVERSAL Keyboard Layout (in the code book) fixed it. I use the scanner for on-site inventory and made a custom page of the setup codes I need and keep it nearby. It has:

READ FIRMWARE – Used to check the scanner is working.
    RESET CONFIGURATION TO DEFAULTS
    OUTPUT MODE – KEYBOARD WEDGE
    OUTPUT MODE – RESET
    LASER/CCD MODE – SINGLE SCAN
    LASER/CCD MODE – CONTINUOUS SCAN
    KEYBOARD COUNTRY – USA
    KEYBOARD COUNTRY – UNIVERSAL
The codes from the Termination String Setup section of the manual (Page 27).
A known bar code of the type I use to double check its output.

Most of the other codes in the Functions and Interface sections are not needed or not usable with the USB scanner.

When I plug it in I have to go through a ritual.
Play with the trigger a few times then leave unit alone a bit to ‘warm up’. The warm up period seems to help the settings stick.
Scan the OUTPUT MODE – RESET code.
Scan CONTINUOUS then SINGLE codes until works only when pulling the trigger. This part can take minutes of futzing to get right.

Then scan the known code to see if it’s outputting correctly. If not, scan the keyboard codes until it does.

BTW: I do not know the format the code book uses. It appears similar to GS1-128. Maybe a proprietary code so you don’t change settings while scanning items.

Other than all that, it does what I need and you get what you pay for. The $200 units are better behaved and much better supported but this unit will get the job done…eventually

I may just have a bad unit and I am deciding whether to send it back. I have tried it on other computers both XP and Windows 7 with the same results.

I included the above info in case someone else is having issues and to warn folks about the AUTO mode.

Please add a comment to this review if yours behaves better than mine (same or
similarly priced model) to help with my decision to return it.

a kind comment by Phillip Rosenberg-Watt had the answer:

“You don’t have to mess with the configuration barcodes every time you plug it in: just hold the trigger until the green LED comes on and then it should toggle disable/enable automatic mode. I discovered this while playing around with the unit. “
