Powerful sound at a minimal cost!, March 7, 2014

    Hector Gomez (Texas, USA) –

I was recently sent a 15” Dual 4 ohm version of this ELUX subwoofer (EXW15) for the purpose of trial and review. I’ll start by saying that shipping was very quick, as usual. I love buying from VMInnovations because I generally find the best prices on the net from VMI and shipping is always fast. Upon opening the box, I was excited to see a nice and clean cone with a durable rubber surround. I pulled the woofer out of the box and noticed the nice push terminals and motor cover on the back side as well. This cover is not simply magnetized to the motor as most low end woofers are. This is securely adhered to the motor structure and seems to provide a good amount of protection to the magnets themselves. This is great because typically, subwoofers will get moved around a good bit and magnets can shift or get damaged. This cover should keep that from happening.

Prior to this test, I had built a large ported enclosure tuned to roughly 29Hz because I enjoy a lower and flatter response out of my subwoofer stages. I was initially worried that this tuning was too low for the ELUX woofer but the suspension stiffness, motor force, and power recommendation all seem to work well together, letting this woofer dip into the 20hz response realm. The amp driving this woofer is a JBL GTO24001 in a jeep cherokee, which produces over 2400w at 2 ohms meaning I had plenty of power on tap for this woofer. I kept the gain low in the beginning to let the suspension warm up and break in a little. After a few hours of listening, I turned the power up considerably. According to data I have taken in the past, the woofer should have been receiving roughly 1800w of CLEAN power, which is over RMS. While I don’t recommend this for most people, I was careful and actually delighted to know that the woofer could handle that kind of power for hours on end. The woofer was able to keep up with fast paced low frequency rhythms and it absolutely crushed low tones. I tested this woofer with classical, dubstep, hip hop, and rock in order to get an idea of where it performed best. I kept the power up for most rock songs in order to really feel the double bass sections and push the woofers hard. It kept up well and sounded very musical. During dubstep and hip hop, the thunder from this thing would flex my roof, my windshield, windows, etc. It is a true ground pounder. I would say it works well with all genres.

We must keep in mind that this is a budget friendly woofer so I would like to compare it to woofers that cost a similar amount except that it outperforms all woofers in its price range that I can recall so let’s take it a step further and compare it to something more pricy. For instance, the Kicker L7. Before the Solo X, the L7 was kicker’s flagship woofer and they were hard to find for under $300. This woofer sounds much cleaner and gets just as loud as the L7 I used to own on a similar amount of power. I’ve also many other mainstream woofers such as the Rockford Power T0, Alpine Type R, a handful of Maxxsonics built woofers, and many others. This woofer hangs with those more expensive woofers and can take a ton of abuse at a fraction of the price.

I would recommend this subwoofer for anybody looking to for a budget friendly system that wants loud and clean bass. It has been the best of both worlds in terms of SQ and SPL, especially in its price range. This is Kicker L7 loudness with a Kicker Comp price. Alpine Type R loudness at a Type E price. Rockford T0 loudness at a P1 Price. Bang for the buck!

VERY GOOD SOUND…. BUY BUY BUY, April 22, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
First off…I received both my subs in 4 working days ! Awesome !!! I blew 2 db drive 12s same box using a Hifonics Brutus 1500 dropped the 12’s down to two ohms then bridged them so running them at least resistance as possible. I like blowing stuff up !!! So after all the different possibilities of brands and wattage I came to the VM Elux 12’s for the price I’m like what the hell I’m gonna see how long it takes to blow… Mind you wired the Elux subs the same way path to least resistance down to one ohm same ported box tuned to 34 ! The subs have a cool look and are way more sturdy than the db drives I had which surprised the hell out of me for the price. Get to the Sound…. I’m gonna baby them for a week but right now being hooked up with my amp 1/4 turned up these babies hit I mean sound really good real deep even with rock ! I keep my radio on Sirus Octane, the subs keep up and sound crisp for double bass and that’s baby em at 10 on the radio and I usually play it at 30… I can’t wait to open up these puppies to see how much thump and low bass (“bass ballin” for all of you that don’t know bass). I will update in a week !!!
Update: Speakers hit so hard I’m scared it’s gonna make my air bags fly out !! The cones do get warm but overall for the price these are some bad azz speakers ! Oh and FLEX, just be ready to call safelite. I had to re glue my rear view mirror already lol front has some insane flex going on hence I have my port facing the front !

My review of VM Audio Elux 15″, March 3, 2014
    By

This sub arrived to me double boxed. I was slightly dissapointed to see that cardboard support inside the factory box had let the sub slip through. It had alot of area to move around although the sub was not damaged due to this. The speaker itself felt fairly solid. It looks really nice. After getting some play time on the sub I was rather impressed. I had it in a 4.0^3ft ported box tuned to 32hz. It got loud from 38hz and up and sounded pretty tight while doing it. The bass was tight and sub responded quickly. Some cons I found were that it does not like anything much below 36hz. I gave it around 1k watts but quickly found that it was way too much. Ignore the power ratings!!!! I would say 500-750 watts is plenty.

Overall I think this sub would be great for someone new to audio, or just a basshead on a budget. This sub is cheap and does about everything it is supposed to.
