At the risk of stating the obvious, this product (Travel Smart by Conair M-500E Polarized Adapter Plug Set) is a collection of Adapter Plugs. It does NOT convert foreign 220V AC to 110V for your appliance. To do voltage conversion you need an AC transformer, such as the Simran SMF-200 Step Down Voltage Converter.

Do you need just an adapter plug set, or a voltage converter? Check the input requirement of your appliance to make sure. If it says “Input: 100-240V AC”, then you don’t need any voltage converters. As a general guideline, chargers for most portable electronics (laptop, camera, cell phone, tablets, etc) have light-weight switching converters that are designed for universal voltage. Older appliances typically come with a heavy AC transformer designed for a single voltage only. Some appliances, such as desktop computer, may require you to flip a mechanical switch to select between 110V and 220V AC input.

There are several versions of AC adapter plug sets available at Amazon. For example, the Lenmar AC5 World Travel Adapter Plug Set. But this particular product has features that I like:
    1. It comes with a draw-string pouch to keep all adapter plugs together.
    2. Each adapter has the region and country names printed on it, so you can make sure to bring the correct adapter plugs.
    3. Each adapter accepts polarized US plug (that means one flat prong is wider than another, so the plug can only be inserted in one direction).

Note that you can insert a non-polarized US plug into a polarized US socket, but not vice verse. As an example, AC outlets in Japan also have two slots shaped like the US version, but they are not polarized. So you still need to bring this adapter plug set if your appliance has a polarized AC plug.

Most hotels in other countries will provide adapter plugs to international travelers, but often at a ridiculous fee. So just buy this plug set in advance and be prepared for your next trip. It is cheaper than getting charged just once by the hotel.

Work fine; five adapters included; adapters are labeled, September 6, 2010

I have so far used these in Spain and in Denmark, which means I’ve used only the narrow two-prong adapter used in most of Europe and Asia (or at least the countries I’ve been to). Also included in the set are the wider two-prong used in some European countries, the slanted two prong used in Australia, and the big-ol’ two + one prong used in the UK. (There is also a fifth piece that will adapt from the narrow round prong to the US, but I assume that you don’t need that.) Plus, a handy (if austere) white cotton sack to hold them all in.

I like that they used the proper names for these in the product listing (NW-1C, NW-2C,NW-3C, NW-4C, and NW-135C), so that you can google and check where you’re going, etc. I also like that the plugs are labeled with the countries they’re likely to work in.

When I travel, I also carry the US three-prong to two-prong adapter for my computer. The way these are designed, a US three-prong will also fit into them, which possibly means you don’t need the extra piece. That might be a safety hazard because it leaves the third prong exposed? I dunno. It might functionally be the same.

I seem to continually misplace my sets of travel adapters and have to keep buying new ones. These are comparable to my other sets. Nothing special, but what you want.

Please note that these are just adapters, which just means that they change the shape of what plugs into what and allow the current to pass through. They are not power converters (they don’t adapt the voltage). Your computer likely handles dual current; my camera battery charger and phone charge do as well. And that’s all I take when I travel… but check your own electronics for the current; you might need a converter and not just an adapter.

(At the same time, I got the Lenmar AC5 set: Lenmar AC5 World Travel Adapter Plug Set. Turns out that the two sets contain the same pieces. I slightly prefer this one because of the labeling and the sack, but functionally, the two sets are the same.)

Travel tip: Consider getting something like the Monster mini power-strip for travel, e.g.:Outlets To Go Power Strip with USB – 3 Outlets (English/French/Spanish) – 3 AC Outlets and USB – Black. This is handy in airports if you’re trying to use your computer and are lucky enough to find a plug (possibly already in use, so someone could let you share), and of course also handy with the adapters, so that one adapter could charge multiple appliances.

so i bought these and I really liked it at first. I took it with me on my 2 month trip that needed different adapters (North Africa, U.k., France, India, and Turkey). It comes in a travel pouch which is cool. Since I came home I found a much better adapter (it’s just one unit, an all in one type of thing) for literally half the price. This other item can adapt anything to anything. This set right here only does U.S. to other countries. Search for the “Insten Universal world wide travel charger adapter plug” by eforcity….should be about $6.
