This review is from: SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Gaming Controller for Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac (Personal Computers)

When Apple announced the release of the new Apple TV in September, I knew I would be among the first in line to pick one (or two) up. It had a faster processor, better hardware, and just offered a better experience than the previous generations of the device. One of the features I was most looking forward to was the promise that the Apple TV would be a premier gaming system as well as a media player. Even though the Siri Remote is a great accessory for the Apple TV, it’s not a gaming controller. The SteelSeries Nimbus, however, is a gaming controller and it’s designed specifically for the Apple TV (and other Apple devices).

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The very first thing I noticed about this controller was how much it reminded me of an Xbox controller. Side-by-side, you almost wouldn’t be able to tell the two apart except that the analog sticks have placement similar to the PlayStation controller. The designers of the Nimbus really looked at what worked with both of those systems’ controllers and pulled them into this device.
In addition to the two analog sticks that I’ve already mentioned, Nimbus also features a standard D-Pad on the left-hand side of the controller, a menu button (more like a multi-function button) in the center, A/B/X/Y buttons on the right-hand side, Right & Left triggers, Right & Left bumpers, and a Bluetooth pairing button. All buttons and control functions operate as you would expect them to and if you have any experience with a gaming controller, you won’t have any ‘translation’ issues carrying over to the Nimbus.

While the main body of the controller is made primarily of plastic, it doesn’t feel that way. It’s got some great weight to it and it feels solid. The packaging for the controller is pretty nice, too. The only thing in the box with the controller is a manual so you will have to supply your own charging cable.
    TESTING
Even though I enjoy product testing, the trial run of the Nimbus was definitely a highlight of my testing year. After all, testing meant that I got to play games. Even though this is a Bluetooth controller and compatible with many different devices, it was designed for the Apple TV. And, as such, I did the majority of my testing with the new Apple TV. Pairing was very easy with the Apple TV and you don’t have to keep re-pairing it. The controller and Apple TV remember each other.
Once the controller was paired, I was off to the races. First, I played a few rounds of Rayman Adventures. Not having any previous experience with the game, I felt like this was a good test of how well I would understand the controller and how well it would communicate with the Apple TV. I can say that it was a flawless test. I was able to learn the commands quickly and found that holding and using the Nimbus wasn’t much different than holding my Xbox controller. I also did not have any communication or connection problems between the Apple TV and the Nimbus. Playing Rayman Adventures felt very much like a standard gaming console experience. Movements were fluid and the controller had a great response with the Apple TV.

One of the other games I tried out was Beach Buggy Racing. This game has a Mario Kart feel to it and is really a lot of fun. The Nimbus performed beautifully and had great options for controlling the beach buggy. Again, this was a very fluid action/reaction between the Nimbus and the Apple TV.
After taking some time with the Nimbus, I found that really the only place it fell short was with the activity-based games that call for a more Wii-like control. That’s where the Siri Remote really shines.
    CONCLUSIONS
I used to consider the Xbox the best gaming controller, but now I find myself wishing I could use the Nimbus for all gaming. This controller is allowing me to enjoy playing games on the Apple TV and because it works with other Apple products, I might find myself liking the iPad Pro as a gaming machine, too.

Playing games using the Nimbus really feels great and takes you back into childhood. While I was playing, I found myself feeling more like a kid playing those colorful games I grew up with – except that those games never looked as clean and crisp as they do on the new Apple TV.
One additional feature that is very cool is the iOS app from SteelSeries that allows you to update your controller when it’s paired to your iPhone or iPad. The app also gives you a wonderful list of compatible games you can install and use with the Nimbus.

I really feel that in order to get the best possible experience with the Apple TV, users should invest in a good Bluetooth controller and the Nimbus is probably the best one in the market. Nimbus has a superior build to it and fantastic design that gamers will cling to.

This is exactly what I was looking for to use with my iPad Pro. It works exactly as I had hoped, has a solid build and the lightning connection charging is just icing on the cake.

I’ve had no disconnects or lags or any problems at all with it. I’ve played games ranging from Minecraft to Halo and it works perfectly.

    Highly recommended.

You can order it directly from Apple for $49, so there’s no reason to pay price gouging prices. I just picked mine up two days ago at the Apple store.

This is an excellent controller for iOS and the AppleTV. Very responsive, very low latency, and very comfortable too. It’s compatible with most current iOS devices (the latest Apple TV along with most iPhones and iPads). It should also work with Macs too. But — because it’s using Apple’s proprietary game controller protocol it will not work with other things like Android devices, PCs, etc. Apple eco system only – that’s how Apple likes it :).

I tested the controller with a few Apple TV games I owned and was impressed with how well both the directional pad and controller sticks function in game. Most games on iPhone and iPad released in the last 2-3 years and nearly all Apple TV games will support it. Steelseries also has an app for firmware updates that strangely doesn’t work on the AppleTV but does on iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. The app also has a curated list of games that are compatible with the controller.

Unlike their similar Steelseries Stratus XL I looked at a few months ago the Nimbus has a built in battery that will charge with a lightning cable. That’s the same cable that charges the Apple TV remote and other recent iOS devices. But they don’t include a charger or a lightning cable in the box. You’ll need to use what you already have for that. Battery life is rated at 40 hours and in my testing I have no reason to doubt that. I wish I had 40 hours to play games to know for sure ! 🙂

The bottom line? If you have an Apple TV / iPad / iPhone etc. and want a game controller this is the one to get.
