Great low priced receiver, May 18, 2014

I bought this receiver based on reviews for the previous model (STR-DH540). That model shows that it’s is discontinued and I wanted a receiver with the same features and maybe a little more. I figured the slight difference in the model and features would be ok. This is to replace an older Sony that I’ve had since 1999 or so and was finally pooping out. I also wanted to upgrade to all HDMI connections as my older Sony had only optical and analog connections. This is also in place of a Yamaha (RX-V467) receiver that I had in the bedroom but decided to move out to the living room. The STRDH550 is now in the bedroom and WOW, what a difference! All the little sound details I was missing with the Yamaha are totally apparent with the Sony. Setup was a breeze after hooking up all my speakers (Polk Audio) and other equipment (PS3, Comcast cable box, Samsung Blu-Ray). I just hooked up the included mike and let the Sony do it’s thing. Sound and video from all sources is crisp and clear and very organic. The Yamaha also has the same feature, but does not yield the same results at all. I don’t want to totally knock the Yamaha, but after listening to the Sony it’s like comparing apples to oranges.Overall, I totally recommend this product. More on this review later after I’ve had more fun playing with it.

I really like this receiver, August 13, 2014

I really like this receiver. The sound is very good and it handles the bass and channel separation much better than my old Sony receiver. I was able to eliminate several cables I had used to connect my TV and sound sources so they video went to the TV and the sound went to the receiver. With the pass through HDMI ports on this receiver, I can eliminate a lot of the wiring and just go directly to the receiver with all my devices then pass though the video to the TV through the HDMI Out port.

The only problem I have encountered is with the receiver input labeling. It allows you to edit the default on-screen names for the various inputs so the edited name of the current input shows up on the front of the receiver. This worked fine until I changed a few settings. Now the input names are showing up again as the default names even though my edits are still shown in the settings. I don’t know what I’ve changed to eliminate my edited names from showing and I don’t seem to be able to figure out how to make them show up again. This is just a minor annoyance though. I was surprised to be able to edit them in the first place.

UPDATE: I discovered that there is a “Display” button on the remote that allows one to toggle between displaying the input labels or other information on the receiver. So, ignore my “only problem” comment above.

    Great entry-level receiver, August 18, 2014

Great entry-level receiver. The sound is loud and clear, and supports all the formats I need it to support (check the manual, available online, for the official list). Works great with both Roku 3 (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Vudu) and Chromecast.

4 stars because the on-screen interface is absolutely horrible and makes using the radio tuner an absolute pain. You will enjoy this receiver as long as the only thing you use the controls for is to select an input and set the volume.
