You can minimize privacy issues if you are concerned, August 25, 2015

After upgrading (in case you are eligible for the free upgrade offer) it is possible to make a “clean” installation. You can download the ISO file directly from Microsoft. During the installation routine you will be asked for a lot of functions Microsoft will support you. Switch them off (all of them). It is not necessarily needed. Do not use the Microsoft account but local account instead (Windows works anyway). After complete installation it is of course necessary to review Control Panel and Settings to make sure that you have considered as much as possible to inactivate the “controlling and data collection” features. Review the IE (still onboard) and Edge settings. Also refuse Cortana to be your personal assistant. Cortana is one of the features using and allowing to have control on your personal data. Instead of browsing with IE or Edge use an alternative like Mozilla Firefox or Opera (Firefox is very popular here in Germany). Following most of the suggestions you reduce Micrsoft’s control on your data to a minimum (but not completely). I have done so and so far I am happy with the result. It is now almost back to my Windows 7 look&feel. I am working with Win 10 Pro. Most of content is the same. For updates I am able to delay them, not possible in Win 10 Home. Hoping this helps a bit. Honestly all Microsoft software and earlier ones included were developed in the sense of collecting your personal data and ignoring your privacy. Using Apple devices instead doesn’t help … they do the same. Android on mobile phones is not that better too. If you want to be completely self-sufficient then use Linux and do not go mobile for internet/e-mail etc.

The negative reviews on here are rediculous.

    – Any problem you have with Windows 10 you can find a solution for on the Internet.

    – Windows 10 detects drivers better than the previous versions. Had a pen driver malfunction on my windows 7 laptop and the upgrade fixed it after hours and hours of trying drivers out on Windows 7.

    – The appearance is really nice and I like the tablet function on my touch screen laptop.

    – The privacy stuff and be turned off and/or there are plenty of programs out there that will hinder Microsoft’s spying to a minimum. I don’t personally care because I have nothing to hide.

    – One thing to remember is that this is still an early OS. There will always be some bugs at first. I saw a bunch when I first upgraded and now I see none.

Give windows 10 and chance and be a free thinker. Don’t listen to the good or bad reviews, this is something you have to try and form your own opinion about. This OS has some surprises and could impress you. Good luck.

Amazing OS, plays fast and loose with private data, August 2, 2015

Fantastic maturation of Windows… fast and responsive plus the inclusion of much longed-for start menu.

My quibbles center around how Microsoft seems to view privacy in the last few years, which they seem happy to slowly erode. Just take a trip to Privacy in Settings and see what’s up for grabs.

By default, windows tracks everything you do and type and assigns your Microsoft account an “advertising ID” so it can send you personalized ads while you, for examplr, play solitaire (never has this been done before) or use its Edge browser.

Even after that and the rest of the “privacy” section, there are unnerving forced updates and the fact that your Internet connection is used to upload updates to other users (not good in a time when some ISPs are trying out data caps in some places). Also, to use Cortana a Microsoft Account is required (with its own built in tracking, email mining and advertising) and even then, Cortana plays pretty fast and loose with your data standalone, requiring everything from location to who you interact with – and how long – to function.

I’m also glad to see a version of windows that has been put together so aptly and can compete with the best of what Apple or anyone else has to offer. I am, however, very disappointed that privacy is the price I paid, we will all pay, for “free” as we hover away from buying software and instead using it as a service or subscription. I understand that we’re facing a cloud connected future where things are changing, but privacy doesn’t have to be the price of it.
