Does exactly what I wanted it to do, December 5, 2011
    By

This review is from: Manhattan 177351 VGA to HDMI Converter (Electronics)
Purchased this item about a week ago. So far it does everything I wanted, which was being able to stream TV (hulu, espn, big 10 network, etc.) on my laptop, and then connect my laptop to my TV via this device so that I could watch on the big screen in HD.

A few things I will say:
    1) Read the box, it only comes with the converter box and power cord. You need to buy or have your own HDMI cable, and vga out cable
    2) Not all HDMI cables are the same!!! After an hour or so of not being able to get this thing to work, I was about to give up. I couldn’t find a lo to help online, but something told me to try using the HDMI cable that was connected to my PS3, to see if that worked. And it did!! I don’t know why, but for some reason, the device did not like the original HDMI cable I was using. I know the instructions or the box don’t speak to what kind of HDMI cable you are supposed to use. I will say this, the original cable I used was a cheaper, non-name brand HDMI cable that I bought on the internet for like $4. The one that worked was a more expensive Vizio HDMI cable that I bought from Wal-mart.
    3) I’ve read that you can only do resolution of 800×600 with this device. This is not true as I currently have mine set for 1280×800. The picture is slightly smaller than my screen but I originally had it set for 1280×768 and part of the picture was being cut-off. The point is I had to try several different resolutions before I found the on I like, and for me at least, there were more options than 800×600, although there are definitely some res. that it doesn’t like at all
    4) Picture quality is a product of your internet bandwidth, NOT the device. No one’s complained yet about the picture quality on here, but I can just see someone buying this product and not be satisfied with the picture quility. If you are streaming over the internet, your picture will only be as good as you internet bandwidth can handle. I have ATT and I think they cap my bandwidth towards the end of the month if I’ve been streaming a lot. Bandwidth, also varies during the time of day and with the number of users on the network. The point is, right now I’m watching Monday Night Football on ESPN.com and I’ve got nearly HD quality picture. So if you have good high speed internet this device works great for streaming video to your TV.

The specs are (at the very least) misleading. This box will convert VGA to HDMI but ONLY at 640×480. Why do they have all those other resolutions on the specs and the box? It will only do 640×480 period. You CANNOT find any reviews of this product ANYWHERE on the net. I can only guess that they were all bad and were pulled. Any specs you find will be cut and paste from the manufacturer.

It cuts off the edges of the image. You can barely see the X to close a window.

Be advised that you’ll need to spend another $30+ on cables because it doesn’t come with ANY. At least they threw in the power supply !!!

We’re running a Toshiba netbook and a Panasonic 720p plasma
