UPDATED REVIEW – PRODUCT FAILED. Limited support but support communications channels are broken, February 23, 2015

    Updated a second time.
The FunLux system died after just 4 months. I was finally able to request an RMA via zmodo.com/rma
I did receive a replacement DVR after returning the defective unit and it is working (fingers crossed).

The support at zmodo.com seems be going downhill however. While I was able to submit an RMA request, the web page to check on an RMA request has been broken for weeks. I did use the Live Chat feature at least one time, but that feature is now broken (error 404).

I tried calling their US toll free number by a recorded message stated that “Zmodo support has moved” and to “go to zmodo.com”

So, the net is – my DVR broke after four weeks. I was able to successfully have it replaced via zmodo.com, but based on the current inability to contact support, I would not purchase another Funlux or zmodo unit.

One of the big problems trying to decide on an inexpensive camera system is trying to decipher the differences between the various systems available. Documentation is weak or non-existent and the manufacturer’s web sites are confusing or apply to systems other than the one you bought.

I just found documentation here […]

This Funlux system is no different. When you open the box there is only a sheet of paper that directs you to zmodo.com for instructions. One of the big problems with zmodo.com is that the site does not refer to specific systems like the Funlux, but instead has generic instructions for systems that are apparently sold under multiple brands. I “think” my unit is similar to a ZMD-DD-SBN8 (but does not have the external controls).

You can wander around there and pick up bits and pieces of information and if you are diligent, you can get it up and running, as I did. Just do not expect a very polished experience.

Now on to the unit itself. I received four cameras and the DVR unit with all power supplies, cables, etc. included. So no issues there.
I first set up the unit with the cameras on a bench to make sure it all worked before I started dragging cables through the attic.
I plugged in the power supplies for the DVR and the cameras, connected the DVR to my home network via an Ethernet cable (no wifi support on this unit), connected the DVR to a VGA monitor and powered it up.

The unit itself has no real controls on it – there are connections for the camera and a USB mouse port but no other controls on the front of the unit (unlike some of the other Zmodo systems that have a remote control and front panel controls. The monitor attached to the DVR only seems to display the cameras views. After I got it all set up I found that there are administrative controls on the screen. You have to double click the mouse to bring up the menu.

Since this unit did not include a hard drive, I installed a 2TB hard drive into it. This was the only function that I used the mouse for – to confirm formatting the hard drive. After the hard drive was formatted. I buttoned up the case with the included screws and rebooted the DVR.

My home network assigned a TCP/IP address to the DVR when it came online. I used the administrative controls on my router to identify the IP address that was assigned to the router. I don’t know how you would do this without looking at the router, but maybe there is a screen I missed on the VGA monitor.

I then pointed Internet Explorer at the TCP/IP address of the DVR and logged it with the default user and password (admin/111111).
You must use Internet Explorer to access the DVR. Chrome, FireFox, or Safari do not work. You also have to install some browser code (there is a button labeled “OCX Download” on the DVR login prompt)
If you try to use another type browser or you do not have the OCX code installed, your browser will only display a blank blue screen.

Once I was logged in as admin, my first task was to change the default password. There are tens of thousands of camera systems that anybody can view because nobody changed the passwords of their systems. Do not be one of these people.

Once the DVR and cameras were verified as working, I installed the cameras and DVR in their permanent location. I mounted the DVR in a closet without a display because I intend to use the web browser or iPhone app to access. The picture quality from the cameras is acceptable. The cameras make an audible “click” when switching from color to night vision modes.
Speaking of the app, I installed the zsight app from the app store and was able to connect to the DVR on my local network by specifying the TCP/IP address. Once I set up a user and password on the app to log in, I was able to view the cameras remotely. I did not have to make any changes to my router permissions.
The IPhone app is a little flakey – it occasionally has a “Low memory” error and sometimes…

… bit of a pain to get setup without any good manual to go off of, April 25, 2015

This review is from: Funlux 8CH Surveillance Security Camera System QR Code Quick View 960H DVR with 4 Night Vision IR-Cut Built-in 700TVL Weatherproof High Resolution Outdoor Surveillance Cameras No Hard Drive (Electronics)
So this unit was a little bit of a pain to get setup without any good manual to go off of, but got it set up none the less, the problem i am having is after a few days of it recording i turn the monitor on and it says the disk needs to be formatted. Of course doing this erases all the previous footage and starts the disk over. This happens whenever it feels like doing it. If i turn the unit off and back on from the switch then that message goes away and it begins recording again, every time i have wanted to go back and review footage it happens to be during the dark times that this stupid hard drive thought it needed to be formatted and did not record. I am wondering if anyone else is having this issue? Not recording makes this unit useless so this is a major problem. The longest it has recorded before this happens is about 8 days and it still has lots of record time before it starts to rewrite over old footage. But it just did it to me again and it was after just a day and a half.

Comprehensive guide to buying a home video security system, February 2, 2015

Before getting in to this review please note that the seller offers several different models at this page, all under the same heading. Therefore some of the reviews you read may be intended for a different model other than the one you are interested in. To be clear, this review is for the model AMDV960H4.

A friend recently installed a very similar home video security system that is one of the most popular models being sold at the big membership warehouse club. I was able to compare this one feature-for-feature with that model, which sells for about the same price. Read on to learn what to look for when you are shopping for a video security system.

In a consumer electronics industry where “bigger is better” is being pushed at us all the time, is that the case with a home security system? For example, do you really need HDTV cameras and a 3 TB hard drive? Do you want a completely wireless system? Which features are “must have” and which are gimmicks?

Here are a few basics if this is your first video security system. These pointers are intended to help you choose the most basic and important features, you may want or need other options to suit your particular installation:

    1. Highest resolution – not a necessity, the higher the resolution the more hard disk space it takes and with some systems the more it will cause your smartphone to stutter or freeze. You are not producing a Hollywood movie; however you do need enough resolution to be able to identify intruders or license tags. The resolution of the camera sensor is not always an absolute indication of how sharp the picture will be, the optical lens also has a lot to do with it. The Amcrest has higher-than-average resolution and good optics.

    2. Largest hard drive – this one is one of the major fallacies of choosing a security system. For most people a hard drive that records for 30 days is useless on modern systems that alert you immediately of an intrusion. You only need video evidence of an intrusion, not a month’s worth of no activity. How will you possibly be able to review a month’s worth of footage? Even 1 week is too much for most people unless they travel a lot for extended periods and may not be able to “check in” from remote locations. The best choice is to set the system to record ONLY when a camera detects motion and record that for evidence while alerting you via smartphone. Also be aware that if the drive gets full and there has not been an intrusion, it simply goes back and records over the now unnecessary footage. This model Amcrest I am reviewing records for 6 days before starting over. Amcrest has models that can record more more.

    3. Color at night – useless. Most systems can be set to switch to monochrome at dark. Even then don’t expect the infrared LED’s to give you a highly detailed picture beyond about 20′. Be sure you can switch from daylight to night modes, including remotely from your phone. The Amcrest cameras give me a view of my entire back yard at night and I can read license tags of cars parked out front.

    4. Lots of cameras – for a typical house, even a large one, four cameras should cover basic security needs. Be sure to include entrances and windows but don’t point the camera right at any window or you will only end up with a silhouette of the intruder. Try to point it 90 degrees to the window so you can include the whole act of entry. The same is true of direct or reflected sunlight, it can make ID’ing a suspect impossible. You may want additional cameras if you need to monitor intrusion to outdoor buildings like sheds, to check on pets, media rooms, etc.

    5. Camera visibility – there are two schools of thought here. One is that someone seeing security cameras will move on to the next house and not risk the chance. Another is that the presence of security cameras equates to valuables and they will try to find a way to disable them. Put the cameras where they will be the most effective of catching someone BEFORE they break in to your house. Don’t install the camera at the front door pointing away to see who is approaching but rather point it AT the front door so you can see if they are breaking in or stealing packages left at the door.

    6. UPS – no not the parcel delivery service but an Uninterruptable Power Supply (a backup battery). Video security systems record on a hard drive and in many ways are like your home computer. A sudden loss of power or surge can destroy the electronics. And when the power comes back on they may not start up properly and resume recording. That makes them useless to you. Invest in a UPS that will keep the system running at least for a short time during a power outage and will help perform a soft shut-down. By the way, a favorite trick of burglars when they see video security is to shut your power off. If your system is still recording on battery power at least it can alert you of an intrusion so you…

My first outdoor security camera system and straight up this is what sold me on this one over any others on Amazon…. 1. Picture quality is great 2. Night vision is amazing. 3. I have an app on my iPhone and works great every time. Last thing that really sold me was I called a couple of customer service companies phone numbers to ask questions about the product and amcrest was the ONLY one who answered the phone EVERY TIME and answered all my questions. GREAT PRODUCT very cool to see on my phone all the cameras from work.

Great Video Security System, March 5, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Amcrest 960H Video Security System Four 800+TVL Weatherproof Cameras, 65ft Night Vision, 984ft Transmit Range, 500GB HDD (Electronics)
    Why I bought it:
My wife wanted to purchase a security monitoring service and after doing some research I was unimpressed with reviews and the cost for the services from many companies in my area, so I decided to buy and install my own. The quality of this product is great for what I was needing and I now have my own personal monitoring system around my home.

I have absolutely no experience with video security systems and this was incredibly easy to install. I honestly did not even read the instructions because it seemed pretty straight forward, and it was. The hardest part of the install was moving around my attic with the wiring, but that had nothing to with the product. It took about six hours to install all 4 cameras with most of that time being spent crawling through tight spaces in my attic to connect the wires into the video cameras. The time spent setting up the equipment was maybe 30 minutes. I was also very happy to see that I could hook this up to my television and now with the push of a button I can see all four cameras on my television screen. This is great for checking the front door when there is an unexpected visitor, or to see what the noise was in my backyard.

There is also an app for this video security system that works perfectly. From anywhere I can instantly check on my home. I have used the app every day since I installed the system and I have never had any problems with it.

I honestly do not have any complaints with this product and my wife is satisfied with these security system in place of a pricey monitoring system. This has saved me a lot of money and I am completely satisfied (I really wasn’t expecting something this great considering how affordable it was). I would recommend this product to anyone in search of a home video security system. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.
