Great Dash Cam Setup!, March 8, 2016

This is a fantastic dash cam system. I really like that it has two cameras so I can record whats going on behind my car as well as what’s going on in front of me. The cameras are discreet and the DVR is small enough to easily tuck away. I ended up mounting mine inside of a little sunglasses/CD compartment on my dash. It fit perfectly and looks so cool when I open it up. My stereo has a screen with video capabilities so I connected it with the a/v adapter included in the box for an even better view of my video.
Installation was a lot easier then I had expected. Once I got started it didn’t take long at all. I pushed the camera cables above the ceiling and then ran them behind the dash. I then ran the video cable from my stereo down to the sunglasses compartment where I made a small hole on the side before re-installing it into my dash. I ran the power cord from that same hole down and around to the front of my dash. (I’ll post pics to better demonstrate) The result is a clean, wire free setup that looks great. If your not planning on going so far on the install, it comes with clips that manage the cables and a DVR bracket for mounting. The unit also has a GPS unit that shows the speed you were traveling and your location on playback. The GPS also has a speed cam alert feature that alerts you to speed cams.
The video quality is superb at 1920×1080 HD and the unit has a LOT of features that you can customize. To review video, you can 1) just take out your MicroSD card and use it on the computer, 2) Connect the DVR to computer via included USB cable 3) Simply view it on the 2.7″ DVR screen itself. There are several modes to make sure your car is safe. There is a park/motion detect mode that will record when you aren’t driving. The Lane Departure Warning System, Driver Fatigue Mode, Open Light Warning (for if you forget to turn light on) and the Forward Collision Warning System will help keep you safe on the road. There is also a G-Sensor that has adjustable sensitivity to automatically trigger the emergency recording if there is a collision.
This is a high quality system and makes my time on the road feel a lot safer knowing that if something happens, I have video and audio proof to back up any claims.

A versatile and high quality vehicle camera!, April 12, 2016

The Esky Ultra HD Car DVR Dual Dashcam with GPS surpassed my expectations. It has great build quality and the dual camera setup is a great bonus compared to most setups that only have a front camera. The benefit of having the base unit separated from the camera allows the actual camera lens to be very discreet and easily hidden, and also makes the setup modular. You can remove the base unit and still leave the cameras installed. It also has a rechargeable battery but works without it, with direct power from the cigarette lighter. The picture quality is very good and does meet the standard of 1080p high def resolution.

I put this camera to the test during a road trip from Seattle to Los Angeles and now have some great road footage to supplement our family videos. The unit itself has USB Mini HDMI and A/V outputs so that you can interface with it in several different ways. Overall, I am VERY impressed with the intelligence behind the versatility of this unit and plan to get another for our second vehicle.

The packaging and instructions page are also both very well done. I recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a dash cam system for their vehicle.

I am pretty impressed with this dashcam unit. It has been installed and recording in my car for three weeks and there have been no failures. This is unlike most units in that it is designed to be concealed.
This poses some challenges depending on the vehicle. The only visible parts left when I was done were the front and rear cameras and the GPS unit. The camera comes in a nice box and has a detailed instruction manual which I highly recommend reading. The menu is quite simple once you get the hang of it. There is an ample amount of cabling to install in most any vehicle other than maybe a stretch limo. I ended up with lot of left over. Basically, everything you need to mount and use this camera is included in the box with the exception of a micro SD card. The price is pretty hefty and for this amount it would have been nice to see this included. Also you should get a class 10 card as the write speed is fairly demanding due to the high quality of the video. I took everything out of the box and laid it out in my shop for testing prior to install. If you have a TV with a video in RCA jack it works great to learn the menu and select the multitude of options before you install. There is also a “panic” type push button switch which locks the portion of the recording to prevent erasure. This is a loop recorder and with a 64GB microSD card I show 8 hours of recording time. My thoughts are I don’t need to lock the video because if I need it for some reason I’m going to pull the card and transfer it to my computer anyhow. There is also an included USB cable to do this. The software is pretty impressive also. It shows which camera shot it, the date, time, GPS location and speed. There is a map that shows you route also. I had no problems with the software or viewing it and spent a good deal of time playing with my files. I took my time during install and did a very thorough job. I would estimate I have about 4-5 hours invested. Your time may vary depending on the vehicle and how exotic you want to be. In my first generation Lexus I wanted to maintain the OEM factory look and I think I succeeded. In addition, I have a 7” touch screen head unit and was able to connect the video out of the camera to the video in on it. Now I can see the front or rear if I choose to. There is really no reason to have to access this camera once installed other than to remove the SD card to retrieve files. For this reason, I chose a glovebox mounting location. One other thing I did not care for is the 12-volt cigarette lighter power supply. I ended up purchasing a female unit from the local auto parts store for about $8. I then plugged the cigarette lighter power supply into it, wired it to an ignition on/off power wire behind my stereo and taping it together to prevent vibration. Just a note about audio quality, it’s miserable. If you want to hear what you are saying in your car while driving this is not the unit for you. The microphone is supposed to be in the front camera. Any conversation is difficult at best to hear. I could hear the stereo when it was loud, and the horn on the car. Beyond that forget it. I did not score the camera down on this as I would normally disable this feature anyway. The last thing I want is to end up in court over an accident and have a jury hear what I said just before, during and after an incident.
Again, I was after the OEM look and the power supply sticking out of my ashtray was never an option.
So, on to operation- When I turn the car on the camera comes on and gives me an audible “Recording started” announcement. It also announces “GPS activated.” I’m probably going to turn this feature off now because there is a very tiny LED on the back camera that shows me the camera is recording. Before I had the installation complete I had everything balled up in the glovebox and the GPS sometimes did not connect immediately. This has been resolved now that I have mounted the receiver on the dash with the adhesive tape. As you travel the camera is recording two separate tracks, one front and one rear. The files are easy to determine as the software shows the tracks as CAM 1 and CAM 2. #1 is the front and you will have two tracks with the same date, time and duration when you view them. There is no provision to view them both at the same time that I am aware of. I really like the sense of security I have now knowing that everything in front and behind me is being recorded each time I start the car. There is also a parking feature that will motion activate the camera and cause it to record while the car is off and parked. This will function until the camera battery runs dead which appears to be approx. 30-45 minutes. I only used it once because it was recording everything that moved, but maybe that’s what you want. All in all, this is great unit but it does carry a substantial…
